See the work where it is made.

I take collectors into the studios of artists working in Mexico City today. You meet the artist, see the work up close, and decide in your own time.

The offer

A private day in the studios, planned around what you collect.

Mexico City has one of the most active contemporary art scenes in the world, and most of it happens behind closed doors. The best work is often in studios that aren't open to the public and don't show up in a search.

Before your visit, we talk about what you collect, what you live with, and what you're looking for. I build a route of studios to match, make the introductions, and translate where needed. If you find a piece you want, I handle the purchase from there.

How it works

From application to studio door.

  1. Apply

Tell me when you'll be in Mexico City and what kind of work interests you.

  2. Call

A short call to talk through your collection, your space and your budget.

  3. Studio day

We visit three to four studios chosen for you. Ask anything, take your time.

  4. After

If a piece stays with you, I handle the sale, paperwork and shipping home.

From the studios

Where the work is made.

You pay for the day, not for a sale.

Many studio visits come with an unspoken expectation to buy. This one doesn't. The fee covers my time, my access and my judgment, so the day stands on its own whether you buy something or not.

Plenty of collectors leave with nothing but a clearer sense of what they want. Some come back to a piece months later. Both are good outcomes. If you do acquire a work through me, your fee is credited toward it in full.

About

Maximilian McDonald

I'm an art dealer based in Mexico City and San Francisco. I work with Mexican modern art and with contemporary artists working in Mexico City today, and I've spent years in the city's studios, galleries and collections.

I started doing studio visits because I saw how differently people respond to art when they meet the person who made it. These days are how I share that with collectors.
